Tactile Doorplates

Whilst overhead emergency lights are undoubtedly a valuable addition for emergency
evacuation requirements, they only offer guidance to sighted evacuees. It may well
be that your visitors are visually impaired or blind -
It is in these situations that the SOS Waypoint tactile fingerplate becomes invaluable. It offers a robust and inexpensive way of addressing aspects of the Disability Discrimination Act as well as enhancing fire safety measures for risk assessment.
To complement our unique range of tactile guidance aids, we have introduced a new design of tactile doorplate. The new version is available as a clear polycarbonate overlay which simply fits over the existing fingerplate to provide an aesthetic solution where decor is paramount. It is also available with a photoluminescent backlight, making them easier to identify in the dark.

The concept is a simple one. The plate is fixed to a door which is part of an evacuation route and gives two pieces of information. The first piece of information is given by the dome shapes. When this texture is felt the evacuee can be confident that this is a door through which they should pass towards the emergency escape route. The second piece of information is given by the wedge shape. In the same way as our tactile wall system indicates which way to go, the wedge shape on the plate informs the visitor, in the case of the illustrations overleaf, to proceed to the left after passing through the door. The corridor doors can be similarly marked to show which one is a escape route door.
